Sonos has confirmed that it is delaying the launch of a new product – which we think is the Sub Mini – after a “challenging” quarter in which the company was hit by the effects of currency fluctuations and inflation.
Sonos spokeswoman Erin Pategas confirmed On the edge (opens in new tab) that “an early product launch” has been moved from Q4 2022 to Q1 2023, so you have a little more time to save for your next wireless speaker.
While Sonos has not confirmed the Sub Mini’s existence, it is widely believed that this is the product in question. Based on what we think we know so far, it will be a cheaper, more affordable version of the existing Sonos Sub.
Sonos has just released its earnings for the last quarter, and they are far below expectations. “We have seen the macroeconomic scenario become significantly more challenging for us from June onwards,” CEO Patrick Spence explained in a statement. (opens in new tab).
However, Spence also hit a confident note for the future. “We look forward to tackling the current environment by operating from a position of strength: we are profitable, we are debt free and we have a huge market opportunity,” he added.
We don’t yet have pricing or other details for the Sonos Sub Mini, but we do know that it went through the US regulatory approval process in June, which under normal circumstances would mean it could arrive any day now.
Review: No rush for Sonos
Generally speaking, Sonos has tried to release two new products every year in recent times. We’ve already seen the Sonos Ray appear in 2022 – a compact, affordable soundbar that we were quite impressed by when we tested it.
However, there is no rush for the company to release new products and product updates. Your wireless speakers are designed to last a long time and will work well for years and years before they need to be replaced.
At the same time, the company will not want to rest on its laurels as competition from smart speakers and other products increases. That’s one of the reasons the Sub Mini exists: to give buyers even more options for their home speaker system.
In addition to its hardware, Sonos also works hard to maintain and improve its software offerings, which are essential for streaming audio over Wi-Fi networks. If the rumors are to be believed, there are major updates on the way in this department as well.
