Nvidia’s RTX 4050 was discovered, or at least the GPU packaging was allegedly spotted, at a Galax event – although as you can imagine, this is arguably not what it looks like, and we must be reeling under the weight of the salt that needs to be applied to that specific ‘leak’.
The sighting of a Galax RTX 4050 box came at an event where the graphics card manufacturer was releasing its RTX 4090 models – the flagship being the only high-end Lovelace GPU that is actually on sale right now – as reported by Wccftech (opens in new tab) (and first flagged in reddit (opens in new tab)).
And that got some people excited that maybe, just maybe, the RTX 4050 is somehow on the horizon. But we doubt it very, very much.
With leaks like these, of course, there’s always the possibility that the photo is faked, but in this case, it looks like it’s likely real – or at least the image could be, but not the box itself. By that we mean it’s probably a mockup box made by Galax to fill the booth at the Philippine launch event, or that seems like the most likely explanation anyway (if the photo isn’t fake).
Analysis: None of this makes much sense
If you look closely, there’s a ribbon on the front of the box where it should say ‘RTX 4050’ to match the other visible logos, so most likely this hasn’t been changed (and just pasted in – it’s this element that makes it look less likely that the photo is fake, at least for us).
But as mentioned, this is certainly not a sign that the RTX 4050 is somehow imminent and that graphics card manufacturers are already producing packaging for it. It’s most likely a Galax employee being mischievous – either it’s a mistake, pure and simple (somehow) – or the company is just filling their booth with other potential Lovelace products (though why didn’t the company use an RTX box? 4080 is a fair question to ask in this case).
Clearly though, a real RTX 4050 case would definitely not be the same size (huge) as the chunky case needed to cover the RTX 4090 main GPU. And so this is clearly an RTX 4090 case that had the text messed up (in real or by someone in Photoshop). VideoCardz (opens in new tab) more reports about it and claims it managed to get confirmation that the box in question was indeed present at this Galax launch event, by the way.
We haven’t heard anything in the rumor mill about the RTX 4050, and if it was any closer, we’d certainly be getting bits and pieces of speculation by now. In fact, we’ve also heard very little about the RTX 4060, which suggests that any wallet-friendly Lovelace GPU is still a ways off, and the RTX 4050 is likely still a long way off.
Although some witty people have suggested that this could be the new incarnation and name of the RTX 4080 12GB, which was recently canceled (or ‘not released’, ahem) by Nvidia after a backlash to that particular model. In all seriousness, presumably this 4080 variant is destined to become the RTX 4070 or likely the 4070 Ti (or Super), although whichever way Nvidia goes with the rename is likely to get confused (not for the first time). turn).
