Apple recently held a major event where it launched the iPhone 14 range and new Apple Watches, including the Apple Watch Ultra, but there’s still more to come, with the new 2022 iPad Pro models possibly slated to headline an event in October. That said, now we’re hearing that they might not be as prominent.
According to Mark Gurman – a journalist with a good track record of reporting on Apple – in his latest Power On Bulletin (opens in new tab) for Bloomberg, the company is more likely to announce the new iPad Pros through a press release than at an event.
Gurman says the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models are “highly likely” to arrive this year, but that they won’t be a “big starter” for Apple, so won’t warrant a big event.
Apparently they will use the new M2 chipset – which has already been revealed – in addition to having some “improved specs”, but nothing drastic.
Gurman states that we will likely see new Mac Minis and MacBook Pros as well, but that they will also use chipsets in the previously announced M2 line and won’t be major upgrades in any other way, so they probably wouldn’t carry an event either. Likewise, there may be a new Apple TV box, but this is not a major product for Apple.
It’s worth noting that using press releases rather than an event for these products appears to be a hunch rather than inside information, and Gurman acknowledges that Apple might feel differently, so an event is still possible. But the key point is that the products themselves are unlikely to be very exciting updates, however Apple chooses to announce them.
Analysis: A new standard iPad is notably missing
While Gurman has listed a few products here for release in 2022, one thing that hasn’t been mentioned is a new 2022 iPad.
That’s a bit surprising, as several sources – including Gurman himself – have previously said that we’ll see a new entry-level iPad before the end of the year.
It’s possible that Gurman overlooked – or forgot – to mention him in this most recent list, but it could also mean they’re no longer confident we’ll see the list before 2023.
If it does arrive this year, leaks suggest we’ll likely see it – along with the new iPad Pros – in October, so it might not be long to wait. But if it doesn’t arrive in October, it might still be a while to wait for this cheap tablet.
